There’s no doubt that it’s been a tricky time for pubs and bars over the last 15 months.  With lock down restrictions starting to relax, however, and a number of high-profile sporting events back on the table, things are finally looking up.

With the UEFA Euro 2020 championship now in full swing, it certainly looks like people across the whole of the UK are taking the opportunity to watch the home nations with a pint (or two) at their ‘local’.  So much so that The British Beer and Pub Association forecast that almost 15 million pints would be sold on the day of the Scotland, England clash in the two countries last week, with 3.4 million pints being sold during the actual game itself!

With things just heating up on the summer sports front and several weeks of the football still ahead of us, it’s likely pubs, bars and restaurants etc will be making the most of the opportunity.  And this, of course, has a knock-on effect on our breweries and distilleries.  After a quieter period, they’ll be working hard to keep up with increased demand meaning the efficiency and effectiveness of their machinery is absolutely key…

And that’s where we come in.  At Vulcan Inspection Services, through our partnership with National Farmers Union Mutual (NFUM), we work with breweries and distilleries all over the UK and Ireland to help keep their plant and equipment safe and productive.  Our team of skilled Engineer Surveyors complete the most thorough programme of statutory inspections on all of the relevant machinery, including lifting equipment and pressure systems, to ensure they’re safe for ongoing use and fit for purpose.

We want our breweries and distilleries to be able to meet their customers’ needs just as much as they do.  Failing plant and machinery can result in unavoidable production downtime, just when demand is at its highest.  And when it comes to replacing failing or aging industrial equipment, lead times can be lengthy, sometimes taking weeks or even months to get things back up and running at full capacity.  Not what your need when you’re trying to keep the nation ‘refreshed’!

Not only that, when operating machinery of this nature, when it goes wrong, it could really go wrong, and we all know if can’t be left to chance.  Not only is it a legal requirement for breweries and distilleries to ensure their machinery and equipment inspections are up to date, but it could help prevent a serious injury, or worse.

And with another England game just around the corner (and the potential sale of another 15 million pints) staying on top of machinery maintenance is much more than a nice to have for our breweries and distilleries.

“AWL’s reputation and market strength is impressive, and we’re delighted to have them on board.  Adding them to the Group will undoubtedly strengthen our wider customer proposition as we continue to focus on leveraging cross-sell opportunities,” commented Gareth Hilton, Chief Commercial Officer.

Emma Williamson, NDT Manager for AWL, commented, “We’ve really enjoyed getting to know more about the British Engineering Services Group over the last few weeks and we’re looking forward to being part of the team.  This is a great move all round and we’re confident it will help ensure a brilliant future for everyone involved,” said Emma.

This is the fourth acquisition for the Group since 2019 and follows UK Road Tanker Inspections, PCMS Eng and Lantei.  Continuing to add specialist companies to our business has already helped really differentiate us in our market as we continue to focus on delivering an end-to-end service that meets our customer’s needs.  Finding businesses that not only reinforce or complement our existing offering, but are also a great cultural fit is important to us and we’re delighted to have done just that with all of our acquisitions so far.

Welcome to Rachel, Client Relationship Administrator, who recently joined the brilliant Vulcan Inspection Services Team.

“Hi everyone! I’m Rachel, I have joined the Vulcan Inspection Services team as Client Relationship Administrator. I graduated mid-pandemic with a degree in Events Management from BIMM Institute Manchester, so have a passion for all things organisation, and am really excited to be part of the Vulcan Inspection Services team.

Prior to my degree I took time out to work in a fundraising role for a local charity alongside working with adults with autism and learning difficulties. I loved it so much that I continued this work throughout my degree and added working on events, in all sectors, to my schedule too! This range of experience and training has provided me with knowledge in stakeholders, legislation, sustainability, finance, and a great capability of the practical applications.

Having grown up in Stratford-upon-Avon, I love nothing more than walking through the countryside with my dogs, enjoying the beauty of the farmland surrounding me. I’m now overjoyed to feel a part of this, alongside such an incredible group of people.

Now a month into this position, I am excited to  have this incredible opportunity to help make Britain a safer place. I can’t wait to speak to and meet all of you, our amazing client’s and agents, soon!”

At Vulcan Inspection services (VIS) we’re all about helping keep Britain buzzing.  From providing your customers with their daily caffeine fix to helping make sure they can have that well deserved weekend away, we’re proud to play an important role in helping you safely deliver what they need.

We’ve worked alongside the NFU Mutual for more than 20 years, completing the most thorough machinery and equipment inspections for you, their customers. And we’re here to help you get ready for a long and successful 2021 holiday season…

Get ready…

After so many months of upheaval across the world, it’s important for you in the hospitality industry that you’re ready for a much-anticipated return to something more along the lines of ‘normality’.  With so much recent disruption, making sure you can hit the ground running when you open the doors again is absolutely crucial.   And it’s our job at VIS to help make sure you can do just that.

Staying safe

Helping keep you and your customers safe will always be our top priority. Industrial safety can be a matter of life or death and we all know if can’t be left to chance.   If your coffee boiler has missed an inspection and is no longer fit for purpose, but you don’t know this to be the case because of the missed examination report, for example, continuing to use it without the necessary repair work could have catastrophic results.  Maintaining a thorough schedule of examinations, however, will help keep your people and your customers safe and your business operational.

and legally compliant

Right from the start of the COVID crisis, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) issued guidance making it clear that the requirements of the regulations would continue to apply.  As a result, it has remained vital that your equipment has been (and continues to be) maintained and inspected at all times.  Whether you’ve been closed for most of the Covid-19 period or you’re operating in a different capacity than you’re used to, meeting your inspection deadlines has remained a legal requirement.

And with a Government road map that now clearly directs us through to the end of these challenges, it’s especially important that your business is safe and good to go.

Keeping disruption to a minimum

Machinery failures could have a knock-on effect on business performance too.  If a piece of equipment is found to have defect, it could be taken out of operation immediately, which could impact your business in many ways.  Whether it delays your productivity or means you can’t provide the same level of service for your customers, taking your machinery out of use while waiting to be repaired, or even replaced, could cause avoidable chaos and disruption.

Are you good to go?

We know that the idea of re-opening your business after a period of closure or reduced activity is exciting all round and it’s important to make sure that this goes to plan.  Ensuring your machinery is good to go to is key.  The last thing you need is a failing coffee machine or an out of service lift just days after you’ve welcomed your customers back!  On top of disruption and downtime, this could be bad for your brand and reputation.

Additional risk after a period of downtime

When it comes to re-opening after a period of downtime, it isn’t just a case of simply switching things back on.  The HSE recently issued guidance on the safe re-starting of pressure equipment after a period of downtime.  Whether it’s your café steam boiler or industrial refrigerator, if you’re in the hospitality sector, it’s likely you’ll be re-starting equipment of this nature and if it isn’t done properly, the results could be devastating.

Read the HSE guidance here.

We’re here to share the load

Our team of specialists know everything there is to know about all of the relevant legislation, so you don’t have to,

And what’s more, we’ll plan your inspections around you and your business.  We’ll work with you to avoid your busiest times, such as the lunch time rush if that’s your preference, and we’ll never take your machinery out of service to complete an inspection when you need it most.

We understand the challenges of Covid-19 have taken a toll on many businesses and it’s our job to help keep your machinery (and business) operational regardless of the circumstances.  We’re Type A accredited meaning you’ll get the very best service and technical competency from our people, giving you the peace of mind that we’ve got your inspections covered – one less thing to worry about in

On top of that, if you’re overwhelmed by the demands of re-starting your business and don’t know where to start when it comes to your pressure systems, we’re here to help, simply get in touch for more information.

A bit more about the relevant legislation

Here’s a quick overview if you’d like to know a bit more about the legislation most likely to impact your machinery and equipment in the hospitality industry.

  • The Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER) are in place to ensure that all lifting equipment is used in a safe manner. Any business or organisation whose employees operate lifting equipment on the job are required to comply to these regulations, which come under the Health and Safety at Work Act. For you this could include passenger lifts, good lifts, window cleaning hoists, forklift trucks and much more.
  • The Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 (PSSR) cover the safe design and use of pressure systems. The aim of PSSRis to prevent serious injury from the hazard of stored energy (pressure) as a result of the failure of a pressure system or one of its component parts.  This includes steam plant such as coffee boilers, hot water and heating systems if over 100 degrees C operating pressure and industrial refrigerators etc.

What’s more, you can’t carry out your own inspections, even if you think you’re up to the job.  The guidance makes it clear that these statutory examinations much be completed by an independent, competent person.  In addition, for certain items of pressure and steam plant the equipment would need to be dismantled and prepared for our engineer surveyor to undertake a thorough examination.

Leave nothing to chance with Vulcan Inspection Services.

We were delighted to welcome Reiss Griffiths to the Vulcan Inspection Services Team earlier this month and he'd love to introduce himself to you...

“Hi all, I am the Sales and Relationship Manager for Vulcan inspection Services. I have spent the early stages of my career in a variety of sales focused roles and am delighted to have joined the Vulcan Inspection Services Team. I studied a Degree at the University of Chester, leaving with a BA honours in Education studies with Theology and Religious studies. I then spent some time in the Education and Training sector, where my true passion for sales emerged.

My initial graduate role as a Sales Executive gave me a solid foundation of experience and knowledge when engaging with stakeholders, shareholders, clients and businesses. As I furthered my understanding of the importance of providing quality Information, advice and guidance and started to strengthen my ability to harness excellent customer relationships and rapport, I became more aware of exactly how I wanted to further my career. And let’s just say, I am loving it!

Many of my passions, including martial arts, musical theatre performance and also being involved in my share of church music bands when growing up; have seen me engaging with lots of people, meaning a people facing role was second nature to me. That is why I find myself here today working with this wonderful team, striving towards making Britain (and the agricultural industry) a safer place.

I am excited to enter into a new sector (for me anyway). Agriculture is so important to our infrastructure and daily survival, so having the opportunity to support these businesses, helping them remain safe and sustainable organisations’ is what makes this role perfect for me. I look forward to getting out in the industry and meeting as many people as possible over the coming weeks.”

We’re delighted to be bringing 2020 to an end with so much exciting activity and so many fantastic announcements.  It’s been a busy year for the British Engineering Services Group and, as an Exec Team, we are extremely proud of our people and the way they have responded to the ongoing challenges of the year.  I’ve said it repeatedly over the last few months, our people are everything to us.  Our continued success as a business, particularly during such a difficult year, is very much down to our complete team.

In the last few weeks alone, we’ve welcomed two brilliant businesses to the British Engineering Services Group family, completed construction at the fantastic Paul Forrester Training Centre and continued to help make sure our customers leave nothing to chance.  All that on top of our brilliant business results.  In 2020 we delivered our strongest year yet and, what’s more, we’ve done it while helping keep carers across the UK and Ireland, caring, exactly when it was needed most.  Our people have remained professional right to the very end, completing testing, inspection and certification work on machinery and equipment in hospitals, care homes, medical centres, research facilities and so much more.

Most recently, we welcomed PCMS Eng and Lantei to the Group.  Adding new businesses to our company brings with it huge opportunities for us all.  These acquisitions will help us further develop our customer offerings as we continue to differentiate ourselves in our market.  PCMS Eng is a leading condition-based maintenance business based in Rotherham.  Their people are the best in their field and they’re a perfect fit for the British Engineering Services Group.

Lantei is an electrical testing business based in Preston with a team of almost 150 people.  They provide a range of specialist services that we already know will be of interest to some of our customers.  Like us, their people are at the centre of their success and their culture is already closely aligned to that of the British Engineering Services Group.  We’re absolutely delighted to have welcomed both teams to the Group.  We know they’ll have a real impact on our company and we’re looking forward to working alongside them.

It’s almost a year since we announced our plans to open our very own training centre and I’m delighted to share that we have done just that.  It’s been a very busy few weeks on this front as we’ve added the final touches to our industry leading facility.  Construction is now complete, new kit and equipment is in place and, most recently, the branding has been installed.  Everyone who has visited the site so far has been blown away by what we’ve done to create our own training centre.  It’s a fantastic achievement all round and we couldn’t have been prouder when we completed the build stage just a few weeks ago.  I look forward to formally celebrating the opening of our facility next year when it’s safe to do so.

We recruited more than 85 fantastic new starters in 2020.  Our recruitment plans are busy again for next year as we continue to focus on capacity and ensuring we can always meet the needs of our customers as we continue to grow.  Our new starters will all spend much of their training period at our new facility, learning from some of the very best people there are in our industry.

Finally, I’d like to thank all of our customers and broker partners, your continued support has been more appreciated than ever as we’ve navigated the challenges of the year together.  As we get ready for what is set to be a very different Christmas for us all, I’d like to wish you all the very best for the festive season.  We look forward to working with you all again next year.

We’re delighted to share that we’re now up and running at our brand new training facility in Warrington.  We look forward to officially opening the doors to The Paul Forrester Training Centre next year and in the meantime would love to share this short video, which we think gives a brilliant insight into our stand alone, industry leading facility, with you.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KxctukwXroQ

Who we work with is everything to us and we love working with companies that take risk as seriously as we do.  That’s just one of the many reasons we’re delighted to announce that Lantei Ltd has joined the British Engineering Services Group.  With a focus on keeping their customers safe and legally compliant, their priorities as a business are closely aligned to those of our wider company and we’re extremely excited to have them onboard.

Lantei is an electrical testing business based in Preston with a team of almost 150 people.  The company’s North West roots and drive for managing risk for their customers makes them a great fit for the British Engineering Services Group as we continue to focus on growth and development.

Along with electrical testing, Lantei provides specialist services including thermal imaging, emergency light testing, EV charging, portable appliance testing, TEGG Services, professional training via Lantei Learning and more.  Their team of 80 Engineers is spread across the UK in line with the requirements of their customers.  They work with many large and high-profile businesses including David Lloyd fitness, Nuffield Health, Marriott Hotels, many NHS Trusts and Housing Associations and much, much more.

“Adding Lantei to our Group is another brilliant opportunity for us.  They have an excellent reputation and their business results and growth over recent years are extremely impressive.  This is clearly the result of lots of hard work from their team.

Welcoming this specialist company to the Group will help us continue to enhance our electrical proposition and expand our specialist electrical offering for our customers.  The family formed business already shares many similarities with ours and we know it will continue to operate successfully as a sister company to our existing business and electrical division,” said Paul Hirst, MD of Inspections.

“This is great timing for both companies.  We’ve both had a really strong 2020 and are looking for the next step for our businesses as we continue to deliver an industry leading service for our customers.  Joining the British Engineering Services Group will allow us to focus on building an even better future for Lantei and our team,” Andrew Livesey, Managing Director at Lantei.

Lantei is the fourth company to join the British Engineering Services Group since we became an independent business five years ago, and the second this year following the successful acquisition of PCMS Engineering last month.  On top of this, we were pleased to welcome Non Destructive Testing company Nortest to our business in 2016 and specialist tanker inspection company UK Road Tanker Inspections in 2019.

2020 has seen significant growth for the British Engineering Services Group with the two successful businesses joining us adding to our impressive organic growth.  We’ve continued to put our customers first providing the very best service with no compromise ever as we’ve navigated the many challenges of the year.  Welcoming both Lantei and PCMS will allow us to further widen our product base and offer a unique and varied service for our customers.
