FARMS AND ESTATES

Did you know that as a Farmer if you use lifting equipment to lift or lower a load it may need inspecting under the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations? If the machine is lifting around people (ie employees, contractors, members of the public) and there is any risk that they could be injured then the machine should be inspected at regular intervals. Also, did you know that you should ensure that you use the correct equipment for your lifting operation? An example of this would be lifting someone to fix a light in a barn. The appropriate equipment would be a mobile access platform or a properly constructed man basket attachment – but never the front bucket of a telescopic handler. Through working with the NFU Mutual since 1997 we know Farmers. We know that you may ask us to avoid inspecting your equipment at certain times of the year such as Harvest time and we will work with you to re-plan inspections outside of these times if required. If you have any of the following types of equipment you may need to arrange for a “competent person of sufficient independence to inspect them regularly:-

  • Air Receiver
  • Café Steam boiler
  • Electrical wiring installation
  • Excavator
  • Fore end loader
  • Fork lift trick
  • Fork lift truck attachments

Working closely with your business we can identify the most convenient time for us to undertake your inspections and help to reduce risk within your business. Whether it’s undertaking a thermographic inspection of your composite panels or inspecting the plant in your poultry shed between flock cycles, we understand the needs of the food and drink sector. The Retail sector is one of the biggest employers in the UK employing around 3 million people. Did you know that the biggest causes of injuries within this sector include manual handling and workplace transport including fork lift trucks? With so many employees to look after it’s important to know what your statutory requirements for plant and machinery are. E.g. how often should a tailboard loader be inspected and how can you fit the inspections around delivery times? For the answers to these questions and many more contact your local NFU Mutual Agent who can discuss how our service can help your business (and just in case you wondered we normally inspect tailboard loaders every 12 months if they are lifting people!). These are the types of equipment commonly found in the Retail and Wholesale sector which might need inspecting:-
