01/07/10 - Coffee Break Saves Rubber Worker from Autoclave Explosion

A Manchester rubber manufacturer has been fined £10,000 with £8,153 costs after an autoclave exploded. They were deemed to have breached two regulations of the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 for failing to have the autoclave inspected and maintained.

The force of the explosion was so great that it sent a 5-foot iron girder weighing 300lb smashing into a worker's bench. Luckily he was returning from a coffee break and so avoided the full impact of the explosion. However, he was still thrown back 15 feet and suffered minor injuries.
